New Year's Eve
High pressure stays in charge across western Europe. Dry and warm for Spain and Portugal, 18C in the south-west. Breezy for southern France and the Alps, with local snow showers for Austria and southern Germany.
Dry for much of Italy, but some heavy showers may clip the far south as an area of low pressure develops over the Ionian Sea. Bursts of rain too for southern Greece . Some rain and snow for the Balkan states, also Slovakia and southeast Poland. Chilly for eastern Europe, but fairly mild toward the north-west, with highs of 7 to 12C for northern France and the Low Countries.
Windy for Scandinavia, with low pressure pushing heavy rain and mountain snow in from the west. Mild and largely dry for southern Sweden and Denmark. Snow reaches Finland later in the day.
New Year's Day
High pressure lies to the west, keeping things settled for France, Spain and Portugal. Highs 17C in the south-west. Fair weather too for the Alps, Italy and the Balkans. Low pressure over the eastern Mediterranean brings heavy rain to Greece and southern Turkey, snow for the mountains. Wet too for Cyprus. Dry and cool for areas near the Black Sea, also Hungary.
Windy for the Netherlands, Germany and much of Scandinavia, with low pressure in charge, centred over Finland. Gales possible for Denmark, Norway and southern Sweden. Heavy snow for north facing parts of Norway. A cold front passes south-east across Poland and Germany, bringing a spell of rain, then wintry showers. Snow is likely to fall widely over the mountains of Poland.
