A deep area of low pressure brings strong winds and gales to parts of Scandinavia


New Year's Day
A fair day across Iberia with lots of sunshine and dry conditions; feeling warm too. It should be staying sunny and dry in the Balearics and across Sardinia and Corsica. Further sunshine in Italy, although chilly in the north with mist and fog patches. Greece is likely to be chilly but mostly dry. Some showers in northern Turkey, with heavy showers for Cyprus.
Cloud and outbreaks of rain in western France. Fair to the east with sunny spells. The Low Countries and Germany should be dry with good spells of sunshine, although a morning frost is expected. Further sunshine in Poland as well as Hungary. Dry in Austria and Switzerland with sunshine here.
Breezy in Denmark but dry with sunshine too. Windy in the Baltic States and dry here. Mild and breezy in Finland with rain, sleet and snow in the north. Windy for Sweden, mild here too. Cloud and rain or sleet in the north. Wet and windy in Norway with gales on western coasts. Drier to the southeast.

Thursday
A dry and mostly fair day for Portugal and Spain though cloud builds from the northwest through the day. A dry day for the Balearic Islands, Corsica, Sardinia and Italy though there will be some cloud around for western areas. The best of the sun over central and southern Italy. A sunny day too for Greece after early showers fade to the east. Heavy outbreaks of rain affect southern Turkey and Cyprus.
A few light showers for central France on Thursday. A cloudy day for northwestern parts of the country but brighter to the southeast. Cloudy but dry for the Low Countries. Some cloud developing over western Germany later but mostly bright for central and eastern areas. A dry and bright day for Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria and Switzerland.
Breezy but dry in Denmark with cloud building through the day. Breezy too for the Baltic States with cloud tending to break through the day. Norway, Sweden and Finland also see a breezy day with plenty of cloud around. Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow affect northern areas as well as western parts of Norway.
